Krummholz Tree Form or "Tree Islands"

In the winter any branches that stick up above the snow are scoured by wind and ice. This removes the waxy cuticle that helps the branches and needles hold in moisure. The exposed branches dry out and die while the protected parts stay alive. This keep the tree from growing very tall.
